Monochronic vs. polychronic

Some cultures are monochronic — time is linear, schedules are sacred, punctuality is respect (Germany, Switzerland, Japan, US). Others are polychronic — time is flexible, relationships trump schedules (much of Latin America, the Middle East, and Southern Europe).

Avoiding frustration

If you're punctual by nature, build in flexibility when connecting across cultures. If you're relaxed about time, recognize that lateness reads as disrespect to monochronic cultures. Neither approach is superior.

Practical navigation

Clarify expectations explicitly: does 'let's meet at 7' mean 7:00 or 'sometime in the evening'? For important commitments, confirm. For social gatherings, relax and follow local rhythm.
