About JR Automation
JR Automation is a US systems integrator that designs and builds custom automated manufacturing and distribution systems, from single robotic cells to complete production lines. It was founded in Holland, Michigan, in 1980 as a family business and grew through a long series of acquisitions into one of North America’s largest automation integrators. Its engineering centres of expertise cover the full build cycle — robotic welding, assembly, testing and inspection, dispensing, material handling and warehousing systems — delivered across the aerospace, automotive, consumer goods, energy and life-sciences industries. In 2019 Hitachi acquired the company from private-equity funds for US$1.425 billion, and JR Automation now operates as a Hitachi Group company, adding digital and IIoT offerings built on Hitachi’s Lumada platform to its mechanical and controls engineering.
Hitachi’s company boilerplate for the integrator reports more than 2,000 people across 21 facilities in North America, Europe and Asia. The headquarters remains in Holland, Michigan, though the company announced in 2025 that a new global headquarters campus is under construction in nearby Zeeland, expected to complete in late fall 2026. For partners, JR Automation represents the integrator layer of the robotics economy: it does not sell robots of its own, but decides which robots, controls and software its customers' factories actually run.
