About Universal Robots
Universal Robots is a Danish company based in Odense that created the collaborative robot — or cobot — category. Founded in 2005, it sold the first commercially viable cobot in 2008: a lightweight articulated arm designed to work next to people without safety fencing, to be priced within reach of small manufacturers, and to be programmed by non-specialists. That formula turned cobots into the fastest-growing segment of industrial automation, and the company reports more than 100,000 cobots sold worldwide. Its current range spans payloads up to 35 kg and reaches up to 1,750 mm, aimed at machine tending, welding, assembly, packaging, palletizing, quality inspection and materials handling across electronics, automotive, metal fabrication, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and education.
Two supporting assets are central to the offer: PolyScope, the company’s programming software, and UR+, a marketplace ecosystem in which third-party makers sell certified grippers, vision systems, sensors and application kits built for plug-and-play deployment on UR arms. Free training through the UR Academy supports adoption. Since 2015 Universal Robots has been part of Teradyne, the US test and automation group, where it sits in the Teradyne Robotics division alongside Mobile Industrial Robots. It is listed here as the pioneer and reference brand of collaborative robotics.
