About Boston Dynamics

Boston Dynamics is an American robotics company based in Waltham, Massachusetts, founded in 1992 as a spin-out from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. For its first two decades it was primarily a research organization, building experimental legged machines that demonstrated how robots could balance and move through terrain that wheels cannot handle. It has since converted that research base into a small, focused commercial portfolio built around mobility. Spot, its quadruped robot, is sold for industrial inspection, facility data capture and public-safety work, carrying cameras and sensors into plants, construction sites and hazardous areas. Stretch is a mobile case-handling robot designed to unload trucks and move boxes in warehouses and distribution centers. Atlas, long the company’s research flagship humanoid, was relaunched in 2024 as an all-electric platform being developed for commercial mobile manipulation, starting with manufacturing applications. Orbit, its fleet-management software, ties deployed robots together for remote operation, task automation and data analysis.

Boston Dynamics designs and manufactures its robots in Massachusetts and sells Spot and Stretch commercially to industrial, enterprise and research customers worldwide. Since June 2021 it has operated as an independent business within Hyundai Motor Group, which holds an 80 percent stake, with a SoftBank affiliate holding the remaining 20 percent.
