ROSA began at Medtech SA, a French robotic-surgery company founded in Montpellier in 2002, which Zimmer Biomet acquired in 2016; the platform has since been developed as part of the group’s ZBEdge Dynamic Intelligence portfolio of connected technologies. Unlike CT-dependent systems, ROSA Knee builds its plan from pre-operative X-rays and intra-operative data, and the same robotic-assistant concept now spans ROSA Knee for total knee replacement, ROSA Hip for direct-anterior total hip replacement, ROSA Shoulder — launched in 2024 as the fourth application and described by the company as the first robotic system for shoulder replacement — and the ROSA ONE platform for brain and spine procedures.
A positioning camera and robotic arm guide resections and implant placement while the surgeon remains in control, and intra-operative metrics feed the group’s data ecosystem. Zimmer Biomet also distributes the TMINI handheld robotic system from THINK Surgical within its robotics portfolio. For hospitals and partners, ROSA is one of the few robotic platforms covering knee, hip, shoulder, spine and cranial work from a single major implant vendor.
