Shanghai STEP Electric Corporation （新时达） is a Chinese industrial automation and robotics company founded in Shanghai in 1995. Its robotics business builds SCARA robots, six-axis articulated robots and dedicated welding and handling robots, and the company reports ranking among the global leaders in SCARA shipments (company-stated). Unusually for a robot maker, STEP pairs the robot business with the drive and control layer underneath it — servo drives and motors, variable-frequency drives, integrated motion controllers and its Sigriner drive lines — and with a third segment, elevator control systems, where it is one of the world’s largest suppliers of elevator controllers.

The three segments share control technology, so STEP sells both complete robots and the control-and-drive stack that other equipment builders embed in their own machines. In February 2025 Haier Group acquired a stake with 19.24% of voting rights and became the company’s indirect controlling shareholder, linking STEP’s automation and robot lines to Haier’s industrial-internet platform. For partners, STEP is a listed Chinese source of robots plus the servo, drive and elevator-control components beneath them, now backed by the Haier group.
