About Hyundai Rotem

Hyundai Rotem is a Hyundai Motor Group company whose defense business has become one of South Korea’s main developers of military ground robots. Its flagship robotics product is HR-Sherpa, a multipurpose unmanned ground vehicle in a 6x6 layout with airless tyres and in-wheel motors, developed for the Republic of Korea Army for surveillance, reconnaissance, materiel transport and casualty evacuation; the vehicle has been tested in actual Army operation for more than two years (company-stated). Rotem also fields robotic firefighting systems and, in cooperation with Rainbow Robotics — a company already listed in this directory — a quadruped military robot: under the division of labour reported by Korean media, Rainbow Robotics supplies the legged robot platform hardware while Hyundai Rotem provides military system integration, command-and-control and mission software.

The two companies are cooperation partners, not parent and subsidiary; their defense-robot cooperation dates to an agreement in April 2022. Rotem’s wider businesses are railway rolling stock and signalling and plant equipment, and its defense line also includes the K2 and K1 tank families. In July 2026 the Army’s first multipurpose UGV purchase was awarded to a competing domestic supplier, and Rotem continues to develop HR-Sherpa and its legged robots for follow-on programs at home and for export.
