About Covariant

Covariant is an Emeryville, California company that built one of the first commercially deployed robotics foundation models for warehouse automation. Its Covariant Brain platform — centred on RFM-1, its Robotics Foundation Model — gives standard industrial robot arms the ability to see, reason about and pick unfamiliar items, and was deployed for order picking, sortation and related tasks in warehouses run by retailers, logistics providers and pharmaceutical distributors, with more than 300 robots reported running on the platform by 2023. Founded in 2017, originally as Embodied Intelligence, the company raised about $222 million in venture funding. Its status changed fundamentally in August 2024, when Amazon entered a reverse acqui-hire arrangement: Amazon took a non-exclusive licence to Covariant’s robotics foundation models and hired the founding team and roughly a quarter of the workforce into its fulfilment technology and robotics organisation.

Covariant stated at the time that it would continue operating and supporting its existing customers under new leadership, in reduced form, and this profile records that current status plainly. The company has published no updates since the transaction was announced, and its website is now a minimal holding page; a 2025 whistleblower complaint reported in the press characterised the remaining entity as existing largely on paper, a characterisation the company has not publicly answered.
