Beckhoff Automation is a family-owned German automation company, founded in 1980 and headquartered in Verl, best known for PC-based control: its TwinCAT software turns standard PCs into real-time machine controllers, and its EtherCAT fieldbus is a de-facto standard in high-performance automation. Its robotics offering centres on ATRO, a modular robot system launched as a kit of standardised motor and link modules from which users configure their own robot kinematics, with the mechanics, electronics and TwinCAT control integrated so the configured robot is programmed like any other axis in the machine.

ATRO sits alongside Beckhoff’s XTS and XPlanar planar transport systems and the MX-System cabinet-free automation platform, giving machine builders one control architecture for conveyance, handling and robotics. Beckhoff reported 5,300 employees and €1.17 billion in 2024 revenue, sells through 41 subsidiaries in more than 75 countries, and remains family-owned with no public funding rounds.
