The Quick Answer

Vietnam runs on Indochina Time (ICT), which is UTC+7 all year. Vietnam does not observe daylight saving time, so its clock never moves. The gap with the United States still changes twice a year, because the US side moves.

While the US is on daylight time (March to November), Ho Chi Minh City is 11 hours ahead of New York and 14 hours ahead of Los Angeles. On US standard time (November to March) the gap is one hour bigger: 12 hours and 15 hours.

As of October 12, 2026, the hours when people on both sides are realistically awake (8 AM to 10 PM local time) are:

  • From the East Coast: 8 AM – 11 AM Eastern = 7 PM – 10 PM in Ho Chi Minh City
  • From the East Coast: 9 PM – 10 PM Eastern = 8 AM – 9 AM in Ho Chi Minh City the next day
  • From the West Coast: 6 PM – 10 PM Pacific = 8 AM – noon in Ho Chi Minh City the next day

US Time Zone Cheat Sheet

Vietnam uses a single time zone from Hanoi in the north to Ho Chi Minh City in the south, so one calculation covers the whole country. Reading tip: “11 hours ahead” means that when it is 9 AM where you are, it is 8 PM in Ho Chi Minh City the same day.

While the US is on daylight time (March 8 to November 1, 2026, and again from March 14, 2027):

  • Eastern (EDT, UTC-4): Ho Chi Minh City is 11 hours ahead. 9 AM New York = 8 PM Ho Chi Minh City
  • Central (CDT, UTC-5): Ho Chi Minh City is 12 hours ahead. 9 AM Chicago = 9 PM Ho Chi Minh City
  • Mountain (MDT, UTC-6): Ho Chi Minh City is 13 hours ahead. 9 AM Denver = 10 PM Ho Chi Minh City
  • Pacific (PDT, UTC-7): Ho Chi Minh City is 14 hours ahead. 9 AM Los Angeles = 11 PM Ho Chi Minh City

While the US is on standard time (November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027):

  • Eastern (EST, UTC-5): Ho Chi Minh City is 12 hours ahead. 9 AM New York = 9 PM Ho Chi Minh City
  • Central (CST, UTC-6): Ho Chi Minh City is 13 hours ahead. 9 AM Chicago = 10 PM Ho Chi Minh City
  • Mountain (MST, UTC-7): Ho Chi Minh City is 14 hours ahead. 9 AM Denver = 11 PM Ho Chi Minh City
  • Pacific (PST, UTC-8): Ho Chi Minh City is 15 hours ahead. 9 AM Los Angeles = midnight Ho Chi Minh City the next day

Most of Arizona and all of Hawaii do not change their clocks, so their gap with Vietnam follows its own pattern. The planner handles both.

When the Gap Changes: Exact Dates

Only the US changes. If you have a standing weekly call, the Vietnam time of that call shifts by an hour on these dates unless you move it:

  • November 1, 2026: the US ends daylight time. Ho Chi Minh City goes from 11 hours to 12 hours ahead of New York.
  • March 14, 2027: the US starts daylight time. Ho Chi Minh City goes from 12 hours to 11 hours ahead of New York.
  • November 7, 2027: the US ends daylight time. Ho Chi Minh City goes from 11 hours to 12 hours ahead of New York.

Family Calls vs. Work Calls

Work calls: there is no overlap of normal office hours. When it is 9 AM to 5 PM anywhere in the continental US, it is evening or night in Vietnam. One side always has to stretch. The fairest arrangement is to alternate: one week the US side calls in its evening, the next week the Vietnam side calls in its evening.

The most workable slot for a US evening call that lands in Vietnam office hours is 9 PM – 10 PM Eastern = 8 AM – 9 AM in Ho Chi Minh City the next day.

Family calls: aim for their evening. People are home and relaxed between about 6 and 10 PM. That evening window in Ho Chi Minh City corresponds to 7 AM – 11 AM Eastern = 6 PM – 10 PM in Ho Chi Minh City; from the West Coast, 6 AM – 8 AM Pacific = 8 PM – 10 PM in Ho Chi Minh City. The typical lunch break there is about 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, which is a poor time to call.

The other option is to catch them in the morning before their day starts: 8 PM – 10 PM Eastern = 7 AM – 9 AM in Ho Chi Minh City the next day and 5 PM – 8 PM Pacific = 7 AM – 10 AM in Ho Chi Minh City the next day.

What to Know Before You Call Vietnam

  • Respect the midday break. The lunch break in Vietnam is long, often 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM, and a short nap after lunch is common in offices and at home. Calls in that window frequently go unanswered.
  • Days start early. Many people are up by 5:30 or 6 AM and offices often open at 8. A call at 7 AM Vietnam time is far less intrusive than it would be in the US, which widens your evening calling window from the States.
  • Plan around Tet. Tet, the Lunar New Year, is the most important holiday of the year and usually falls in late January or February (February 6 in 2027). Businesses close for about a week and families travel home. Call to send good wishes, and expect work to pause.
  • Use the app they use. Zalo is the most widely used messaging and calling app in Vietnam, alongside Facebook Messenger. Ask which one your contact prefers and send a quick text before calling.

Turn the Time Into an Invitation

Working out the hour is half the job; the other half is making sure the person on the other end reads the same time you meant. In the time zone planner, pick your city and Ho Chi Minh City, choose a date and time under “Plan a call”, and copy the link. When they open it, the page shows the call in their local time and offers a calendar file. The calculation uses the clock rules for the exact date you picked, so it stays right across the daylight saving changeovers.

These figures were calculated on October 12, 2026 from the IANA time zone database (Asia/Ho_Chi_Minh and the four main US zones). Governments occasionally change their clock rules, so for a date far in the future, check again closer to the time.
