The Quick Answer
Most of Brazil - including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and the capital, Brasilia - runs on Brasilia Time (BRT), which is UTC-3 all year round, with no daylight saving time. Brazil abolished its daylight saving time in 2019, so the Brazilian clock never moves; only the US side changes.
That makes Brazil the easiest large country in this series to call from the US. While the US is on daylight time, which runs until November 1, 2026, Sao Paulo is just 1 hour ahead of New York and 4 hours ahead of Los Angeles - close enough that normal office hours overlap almost completely. When US standard time begins on November 1, 2026, the gap grows by one hour, to 2 hours ahead of New York and 5 hours ahead of Los Angeles, and it stays there until March 14, 2027.
As of October 20, 2026, the best business window from the East Coast is simply your own workday: 9 AM - 5 PM Eastern = 10 AM - 6 PM in Sao Paulo. From the West Coast, use your morning: 9 AM - 1 PM Pacific = 1 PM - 5 PM in Sao Paulo. To check your own pair of cities for today's date, open the time zone planner with New York and Sao Paulo already selected.
Key Facts
- Brazil has four time zones: UTC-2 (Fernando de Noronha), UTC-3 (Brasilia Time - Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and most of the population), UTC-4 (Amazon Time - including Manaus), and UTC-5 (Acre Time, in the far west).
- Brazil does not observe daylight saving time; it was abolished in 2019, so Brazilian offsets stay fixed all year.
- Time difference from the US during US daylight time: Sao Paulo is 1 hour ahead of Eastern, 2 ahead of Central, 3 ahead of Mountain, 4 ahead of Pacific.
- Time difference during US standard time (November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027): add one hour to each of those gaps.
- Best business window from the US East Coast: 9 AM - 5 PM Eastern reaches 10 AM - 6 PM in Sao Paulo (US daylight time).
- Best business window from the US West Coast: 9 AM - 1 PM Pacific reaches 1 PM - 5 PM in Sao Paulo (US daylight time).
- All figures in this guide were calculated on October 20, 2026 from the IANA time zone database (America/Sao_Paulo and the four main US zones).
US Time Zone Cheat Sheet
Reading tip: "1 hour ahead" means that when it is 9 AM where you are, it is already 10 AM in Sao Paulo the same day. Unlike the Asia routes in this series, nothing here crosses the date line - a Tuesday call in the US is a Tuesday call in Brazil, which removes the most common scheduling error entirely.
While the US is on daylight time (until November 1, 2026, and again from March 14, 2027):
- Eastern (EDT, UTC-4): Sao Paulo is 1 hour ahead. 9 AM New York = 10 AM Sao Paulo
- Central (CDT, UTC-5): Sao Paulo is 2 hours ahead. 9 AM Chicago = 11 AM Sao Paulo
- Mountain (MDT, UTC-6): Sao Paulo is 3 hours ahead. 9 AM Denver = 12 PM Sao Paulo
- Pacific (PDT, UTC-7): Sao Paulo is 4 hours ahead. 9 AM Los Angeles = 1 PM Sao Paulo
While the US is on standard time (November 1, 2026 to March 14, 2027):
- Eastern (EST, UTC-5): Sao Paulo is 2 hours ahead. 9 AM New York = 11 AM Sao Paulo
- Central (CST, UTC-6): Sao Paulo is 3 hours ahead. 9 AM Chicago = 12 PM Sao Paulo
- Mountain (MST, UTC-7): Sao Paulo is 4 hours ahead. 9 AM Denver = 1 PM Sao Paulo
- Pacific (PST, UTC-8): Sao Paulo is 5 hours ahead. 9 AM Los Angeles = 2 PM Sao Paulo
Most of Arizona and all of Hawaii do not change their clocks, so their gap with Brazil follows its own pattern. The planner handles both.
When the Gap Changes: Exact Dates
Only the US changes. If you have a standing weekly call with someone in Brazil, their local time for that call shifts by an hour on these dates unless you move it:
- November 1, 2026: the US ends daylight time. Sao Paulo goes from 1 hour to 2 hours ahead of New York.
- March 14, 2027: the US starts daylight time. Sao Paulo goes from 2 hours to 1 hour ahead of New York.
- November 7, 2027: the US ends daylight time. Sao Paulo goes from 1 hour to 2 hours ahead of New York.
Which Brazilian Time Zone Is Your Contact In?
This is the one real trap on this route. "Brazil time" is not one time. Before you schedule, confirm which zone your contact is actually in:
- UTC-3, Brasilia Time: Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, Curitiba - the south, southeast and most of the northeast coast, and the large majority of Brazil's population and businesses.
- UTC-4, Amazon Time: Manaus and the states of Amazonas, Rondonia, Roraima, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. These cities are one hour behind Sao Paulo - the same offset as New York during US daylight time.
- UTC-5, Acre Time: the state of Acre and the far western edge of Amazonas, two hours behind Sao Paulo.
- UTC-2: the island of Fernando de Noronha only, one hour ahead of Sao Paulo.
If a Brazilian partner gives you a time without a city, ask which city it refers to. A call set for "10 AM Brazil time" can mean three different UTC times depending on who sent it.
Family Calls vs. Work Calls
Work calls: this route barely needs strategy. From the East Coast, your full 9-to-5 sits inside or beside Sao Paulo's 9-to-6 for most of the year. The one adjustment comes during US standard time (November to March), when 5 PM Eastern is already 7 PM in Sao Paulo: keep joint meetings between 9 AM and 3 PM Eastern in those months and nobody works late. From the West Coast, front-load the day - your morning is their afternoon, and your afternoon is their evening.
Family and friend calls: evenings line up kindly. Sao Paulo's evening, roughly 6 PM - 10 PM, is 5 PM - 9 PM Eastern during US daylight time and 4 PM - 8 PM Eastern during standard time - an ordinary after-work call on both sides, with no one setting an alarm. On the West Coast their evening is your early-to-mid afternoon, which suits a weekend call well. Lunch in Brazil is a real meal, often a full hour between noon and 2 PM; a call that lands at 12:30 PM Sao Paulo time will often be declined or rushed, so aim before 11 AM or after 2 PM their time for anything that matters.
What to Know Before You Call Brazil
- WhatsApp is the default channel. Business and personal calls in Brazil routinely happen on WhatsApp rather than a landline or a calendar-invite video link. Expect the call to move there, and confirm the number - including the +55 country code - in advance.
- Carnival closes the country. During Carnival, and to a lesser extent in the week between Christmas and New Year, most offices close or run skeleton staff. Great for a personal greeting, poor for a deadline.
- Old guides are wrong about the clocks. Anything written before 2019 may still describe Brazilian daylight saving time and a gap that narrows in October. Brazil no longer moves its clocks at all; if a source says otherwise, it is out of date.
- Warm first, business second. A few minutes of genuine conversation before the agenda is normal and expected in Brazilian business culture. Jumping straight to business in the first minute can read as abrupt.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming one national time zone. Sao Paulo and Manaus differ by an hour; Sao Paulo and Acre by two. Confirm the city, not just the country.
- Forgetting the November shift. Because Brazil itself never changes, US callers forget that their own clock change still moves the gap - recurring calls drift an hour in November and back in March.
- Scheduling over Brazilian lunch. Noon to 2 PM in Sao Paulo is protected meal time for many workers; the same call an hour earlier or later gets a much better reception.
- Comparing with the wrong Americas route. Mexico, covered in our guide to calling Mexico, sits behind US time; Brazil sits ahead of it. Mixing the two directions is an easy way to be two to six hours wrong.
Turn the Time Into an Invitation
Working out the hour is half the job; the other half is making sure the person on the other end reads the same time you meant. In the time zone planner, pick your city and your contact's Brazilian city, choose a date and time under "Plan a call", and copy the link. When they open it, the page shows the call in their local time and offers a calendar file. The calculation uses the clock rules for the exact date you picked, so it stays right across the US daylight saving changeovers. If you are planning a trip rather than a call, our Brazil trip cost guide and the Brazil culture guide cover the money and etiquette side.
These figures were calculated on October 20, 2026 from the IANA time zone database (America/Sao_Paulo and the four main US zones). Governments occasionally change their clock rules, so for a date far in the future, check again closer to the time.
