Communication across cultures has clear principles
While every culture is unique, certain principles make cross-cultural communication consistently smoother. Knowing the key do's and don'ts helps you connect respectfully and avoid common pitfalls.
Most communication breakdowns come from assumptions β assuming your norms are universal, or that others think the way you do.
The do's
- Do listen actively and ask genuine questions.
- Do learn about the culture beforehand via our Country Guides.
- Do speak clearly and patiently across language barriers.
- Do treat each person as an individual.
- Do show humility and admit when you don't understand.
The don'ts
Don't assume your customs are universal. Don't rely on idioms, slang, or sarcasm that may not translate. Don't use humor about sensitive cultural topics. Don't rush or interrupt β pacing varies by culture. And don't treat anyone as a representative of their entire culture.
Above all, lead with curiosity and respect. Learn about communication context styles and how to handle misunderstandings when they happen β because they will, and that's okay.
