Trust is universal, but earned differently
Every culture values trust, but how people build it varies dramatically. In some cultures, trust comes from competence and reliability; in others, it grows through personal relationships and time spent together. Understanding this prevents frustration and missteps.
Misreading how trust works can make you seem cold or pushy β or make others seem evasive β when really you're just operating on different systems.
Two paths to trust
- Task-based trust β earned through competence, reliability, and follow-through (common in the US, Germany, Scandinavia).
- Relationship-based trust β grown through personal connection, shared meals, and time (common in China, Brazil, the Middle East).
- Most cultures blend both, but lean one way.
- Patience matters in relationship-based cultures.
- Reliability matters everywhere.
Earn trust anywhere
Be consistent and keep your promises β reliability builds trust universally. In relationship-based cultures, invest time in getting to know people personally before focusing on goals. Show genuine interest in them, not just what you want.
