The story

In 1979, a jewelled golden hare was buried in the English countryside, and a book of clues sparked a three-year hunt. On November 16, 2026, the hare returns — this time, hidden in a website. No shovels. No gardens harmed. Just ten countries, ten clues, and one very patient hare.

How it works

  1. Start at the first clue. The hunt opens on the United Kingdom’s culture page. Every clue names its country and hides in plain sight — in a greeting, a dining custom, a caption.
  2. Solve to unlock. Enter each answer on this page. A correct answer opens the next clue. Write down the first word of every “hare’s marginal note” you pass — the final door asks for the word they spell.
  3. Finish, and be counted. The first person through all ten clues wins the hare. The first 100 finishers each choose a rural school to receive a set of donated books.

The prize

The prize is “Dancing Hare,” a solid bronze hare sculpted by Sue Maclaurin and hand-cast in England by Nelson & Forbes using the lost-wax method. It stands 17 cm tall, finished in a warm bronze patina — bronze, not gold: the “golden” in our name honours the 1979 original, and we would rather show you the real hare than gild it. It is a numbered piece from a limited edition of 250, and it arrives with the artist’s signed certificate of authenticity. Before the first clue goes live, the hare was photographed, inspected, and sealed on camera; the seal record is published below.

Sealed, on camera

On October 28, 2026, the hare — casting number 86 of 250 — was placed in its presentation box together with its signed certificate of authenticity, and the box was sealed in one continuous, unedited take: the seal band was signed and dated across the closure. The box stays sealed until a winner is confirmed.

The full sealing, in one take — certificate and casting number shown to camera before the box is closed.

Number 86 of 250

The hare waiting at the end of the ten clues is copy No. 86 of 250 of “Dancing Hare” — a solid cast bronze by sculptor Sue Maclaurin, lost-wax cast in England by Nelson & Forbes. It stands 17 cm tall, finished in a brown patina, and comes with the artist’s signed, numbered certificate — the number on the certificate is the number on the hare.

Only 250 copies of this edition exist. This one was verified, photographed and sealed on camera before the hunt begins (see the sealing video above). The seal stays unbroken until the first hunter solves all ten clues — or the hunt closes on February 28, 2027.

Ten clues. Ten countries. One numbered hare. The hunt opens November 16.
